Holland America Line Ship Classes

Holland America Line ships can be broken into 4 different classes. Each class has specific features and amenities that make it stand out from others and be easily recognized, such as size, capacity, year built, and the different venues available onboard. Holland America Line ship classes are as follows:

  • Pinnacle Class: Ships in this class are the latest and biggest ones in the fleet with a size of 99,500 tons each. All three vessels in this class host five specialty dining venues with options ranging from Asian cuisine to an Italian restaurant. Pinnacle Class ships are the only ones that boast all of Holland America's signature entertainment venues such as Billboard Onboard where guests can enjoy chart-topping hits and sing along, there are also trivia questions presented on the screens found across the room; B.B. King's Blues Club where dancing to a rich southern heritage of classic soul and rock & roll will be irresistible; the Rolling Stone Lounge features a live band playing classic rock each night. If there's a risk of rain, the main pool areas on the Pinnacle Class ships can be covered by a retractable glass dome. Pinnacle Class ship is also home to state-of-the-art theaters with push-out stages surrounded by 270-degree LED screens. The three ships in this class are Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Koningsdam.
  • Signature Class: Ships on this class are somewhat smaller than the Pinnacle Class ships, which results in slightly fewer amenities, one of the main differences is the lack of a B.B. King's Blues Club, however, another live music venue called Third Avenue West can be found instead. Signature Class ships have an exclusive restaurant called Morimoto by Sea which is only open at dinner-time, guests can enjoy Japanese cuisine at this venue created by chef Masaharu Morimoto. Only three of the five specialty dining venues are available on Signature Class ships. There are also two pool areas onboard ships from this class, one is located at the aft and the main pool at the middle portion of the vessel is also covered by a retractable dome. Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam are the only ships in this class.
  • Vista Class: Vista Class ships are very similar in size to Signature Class ships, they are slightly smaller and have a lower maximum capacity as well. Ships on this class only offer two specialty dining venues: Pinnacle Grill Steakhouse and Canaletto, an Italian restaurant., however Morimoto by Sea can also be found onboard. Another signature feature that is common across most Holland America Line cruise ships is the retractable glass dome covering the main pool area, which is also found on Vista Class ships as well as a second, slightly smaller pool area located at the aft. Guests can also find Billboard Onboard and the Rolling Stone Lounge.
  • R Class: The two ships in this class are the oldest and smallest vessels in Holland America Line's fleet. Due to the smaller size, the amount and variety of amenities are limited, especially if compared to other ship classes within Holland America Line. The smaller size is alluring to guests who want an intimate and relaxing experience onboard a classic and elegant cruise ship. R Class ships usually sail longer itineraries that offer the most enriching experiences and activities on Holland America Line. Zaandam and Volendam are the two cruise ships that make up the R Class.
