Day 5 - Friday - Mar 15, 2024
Campeche, Mexico
Campeche, Mexico
The colors of the rainbow adorn this fortified port city on the Yucatan Peninsula's western edge, in the restored facades of the historic buildings lining its cobblestone streets. In the mid-1600s, the city walls were erected to protect against pirates and marauders. The massive walls took approximately 18 years to complete, from 1686 until 1704. The hexagonal enclosure has a perimeter of 8,400 feet (2,560 meters), and its height is over 26 feet (8 meters). Shortly after Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, the Yucatan region became a Mexican state. At that time, the state of Yucatan included the areas that are now the separate states of Campeche and Quintana Roo. Over the next quarter of a century, frequent rebellions brought occasional changes to the region's political status, including several periods when Yucatan declared itself an independent republic. In 1848, Yucatan rejoined Mexico for good, but internal disputes continued to plague the region. The discovery of oil fields off the coast of Campeche in the 1970s transformed the region's economy and increased its political volatility, requiring occasional federal intervention to maintain order. Now one of the least-populated Mexican states, Campeche was once the site of a flourishing Mayan civilization. Campeche is also home to Mexico's oldest annual Carnival celebration. The state's second-largest city, Ciudad del Carmen, receives much of its annual income from tourism. Today, the locals have a reputation for welcoming visitors.
Day 6 - Saturday - Mar 16, 2024
Progreso, Mexico
Progreso, Mexico
Day 7 - Sunday - Mar 17, 2024
Progreso, Mexico
Progreso, Mexico
Progreso was founded by Don Juan Miguel Castro in 1872. The port was originally developed to export henequen (a fiber produced in the hinterland), but it now handles a variety of regional exports, including wood products and copra - the kernel of the coconut palm fruit. Progreso started welcoming cruise ships a few years ago and boasts the world's longest pier: 4 miles. A mixture of white-sand beaches and clear, calm waters make it a popular warm-weather resort. Historic colonial buildings, a bustling marketplace, and lush mangroves are appealing to most visitors. The increase in international tourists is slowing transforming the city, but if you seek a taste of "authentic" Mexico, Progreso will not disappoint. More than half of the Mexican people live in the center of the country, whereas vast areas of the arid north and the tropical south are sparsely settled. Nearly four-fifths of Mexicans live in urban areas. Mexico has experienced economic booms leading to social gains, followed by busts. The country remains economically fragile despite forging stronger ties with the U.S. and Canada through the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and NAFTA before it. Your included tour visits the Great Museum of the Mayan World in nearby Merida to learn the civilization's history, as well as Malecon de Progreso, a boardwalk filled with vendors, shops, and eateries. Optional premium excursions take you to the Uxmal Mayan ruins, where the Pyramid of the Magician was built atop pre-existing pyramids. Or a kayaking adventure to discover the ecosystem and the native wildlife that inhabit it.
