The Tennessee River is the largest tributary of the Ohio, located in the Tennessee Valley in the southeastern United States. The Tennessee River is 652 miles long and begins at the confluence of the French Broad River and Holston River, just east of Knoxville, TN.
Once popularly known as the Cherokee River, its name is derived from the Cherokee village, Tanasi. As you travel down the river, relive the stories of various Native American cultures that inhabited the river valley for over 10,000 years.
Enjoy the stunning 26-mile Tennessee River Gorge, carved by the river over thousands of years. Known as "Tennessee's Grand Canyon" the area surrounding the gorge is 27,000 acres of mostly undeveloped forest and a rich wildlife population. The canyon is home to about 1,100 varieties of plants, nearly 200 different species of birds, and a few thousand people.
