The Elbe River is an important Central Europe waterway, originating in the northwestern mountains of the Czech Republic and lacing through much of Germany on its way northwest to the North Sea.
Passengers will take a journey down a river that is predominantly natural, untouched or altered by technology and infrastructure. Much of the river is a part of the UNESCO biosphere reserve, established to promote a balanced relationship between humans and our natural environment. This provides an important wetlands habitat for hundreds of birds, fish and plants. On the Elbe River, preservation is a priority so cruisers have an opportunity to experience the river as it has always appeared throughout history.
The lush landscape supports many areas along the river that produce wine. Picturesque vineyards and captivating wine villages await travelers on the Elbe.
The major port of call to visit on an Elbe River cruise is Dresden, known as the "Florence on the Elbe", and home of numerous museums and castles. A few other cities found on an Elbe river cruise itinerary are Dessau, Torgau, and Melnik. Dessau is a great place to experience the tranquility of Worlitz Park, Torgau being a picturesque testament to the Renaissance era, and visit Melnik for a sample of the local wine.
With trade routes as far as Prague, and canals linked to Berlin, cruises along the Elbe River offer passengers an opportunity to experience cosmopolitan cities and hilltop castles in medieval towns all on the same enchanting river cruise.
