San Juan is a city of white-sand beaches, lush rainforests, and inspiring Spanish colonial architecture. Compact and elegantly planned, Old San Juan spans the centuries. El Morro fortress has been standing watch over San Juan Bay since the 16th century and its formidable cannons peer out to sea. The streets of this centuries-old UNESCO World Heritage Site are paved with steel-blue adoquin stone, used to ballast the Spanish galleons that brought settlers here. These colorful, narrow byways lead to picturesque multihued facades and townhouses with neoclassical balconies.

The British Virgin Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean. One of this lush green island's most notable historic moments took place in 1595, when Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins gathered their fleets off Virgin Gorda for target practice, to prepare for an attack on San Juan. The attack was a failure. Later, Cornish settlers set up a mining operation here, the remains of which are preserved at Copper Mine National Park. Today, Virgin Gorda is renowned for The Baths, a naturally occurring pile of boulders forming cozy grottoes which are fed by the tide.

St. Barthelemy forms the French West Indies along with St. Martin, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. The name of its capital and main port, Gustavia, reflects its history as the only Caribbean island to have once been a Swedish colony, from 1784 to 1878. Today the island is a Caribbean dream-a rewarding and altogether surprising blend of French culture, gently rolling rainforest hills, remote beaches bathed in sun, yacht-filled shimmering bays, and vibrant gardens overflowing with bougainvillea.

Learn about the history of Montserrat during a hike to view pre-Colombian petroglyphs, or learn about the effects of Soufriere Hills volcano's recent eruptions and the island's efforts to rebuild. St. Lucia's vibrant port of Soufriere exudes all the charms of an authentic fishing village. Its delightful streets are a pleasure to explore for their Caribbean flair and Creole cuisine. A journey deeper into the island's rainforests offers unrivaled beauty. The magnificent Gros and Petit Pitons, the famed pair of volcanic pylons and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, take center stage, soaring above a spellbinding canvas. And there is so much more here to captivate nature lovers, from the volcano at Sulphur Springs and the lush Botanical Gardens, to rainforest hikes and dreamy beaches.

Barbados is rich in British history and spectacular sandy beaches. Home to the Commonwealth's third-oldest parliament, Barbados is often called "Little England" for its lasting British influence. Bajans, as islanders are known, exude a hearty love of their small island country and delight in sharing its culture. Cricket matches and afternoon tea are as common here as surfing and sunning on the beach with family and friends. And a bottle of the island's native Mount Gay Rum, accompanied by a conkie, a pumpkin-coconut cake steamed in banana leaves, are never far out of reach.

Call on Ile Royale (Royal Island), one of the three Iles du Salut that belong to the French Guiana mainland. These three "Islands of Salvation" were a much-feared penal colony for the most notorious French criminals. You will see monkeys in the wild, as well as tropical birds and small rodent-like mammals as you explore, then admire scenic views over the whole island.

The Cidade Maravilhosa, or "Marvelous City", is blessed with a stunning setting so unique that UNESCO gave it World Heritage Site status. Gaze at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue perched atop Corcovado mountain and admire the azure-blue waters as they lap against the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Take a cable car to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain and marvel at the panoramic vistas below.

Enjoy a second day to discover more of Rio de Janeiro and its beautiful surroundings. Hike a steep trail to the summit of looming Morro Dois Irmaos, where sweeping views of Rio await. Paddle by kayak to Cotunduba Island, along the way getting a water-level perspective of the city's many iconic landmarks.

The natural beauty in and around Rio is one of its hallmarks. Well known for the many beaches that dot its 152 miles of coastline, even more impressive is Tijuca National Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take to the air in a helicopter for a bird's-eye view of Rio and its lush surroundings. Marvel at iconic landmarks such as Corcovado, with its iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema from above.
